Offline Mafia

Introduction

Mafia is a test of the human psyche. And, like the internet version, it can be an incredibly fun game if played right. The game Mafia mutated and spawned from the original game of Murder. In murder, one murderer is picked by the Master of Ceremonies who then gets to choose a person each night to kill. Of course, that game seemed too dull from one Dmitry Davidoff, who kicked the game up a notch with one heck of a bam. Suddenly, it wasn't a murderer, a detective and the townsfolk, it became an all out duel between the Mafia, the Townsfolk, the Doctor, the Angel and any other role you could imagine.
The basic idea behind the game is for the innocents to attempt to kill the villains before the villains do the same to them. Much like Online Werewolf, there can be special roles and abilities that certain townsfolk possess which allows them to attempt to stop the Mafia more quickly.

How to play

The game is played with your stock standard deck of playing cards. The following cards are drawn from the deck by the Master of Ceremonies.
  • The Mafia cards. Usually black pictures cards (EG: The Jack of Clubs)
  • The Angel card. Usually the Queen of Hearts.
  • The Sheriff card. Usually the King of Hearts.
  • The Doctor card. Usually the Ace of Hearts.
  • The Townsfolk cards. Usually red number cards (EG: The 2 of Hearts)
NB: These cards are subject to change, addition to, removal or alteration at the discretion of the Master of Ceremonies.
The other cards in the deck are placed elsewhere. The cards drawn out (there should be enough for one per player) are flipped face down and shuffled thoroughly. Each player then takes a card and looks at it without showing any other player.
The Master of Ceremonies will then call out that it is day one and time for the first execution. They time for two minutes whilst the players discuss who they wish to kill. Once the time is up, everybody must cast their vote by pointing at whom they wish to kill. Whoever has the most votes is executed immediately and must reveal their card to the group.
  • If there is no majority, thirty more seconds is timed by the Master of Ceremonies. Then everybody must vote again. If there is no majority in the second vote, there is no execution that day.
The Master of Ceremonies then calls out that is Night One. Everybody must shut their eyes. The Master of Ceremonies will then call out for the Doctor to open their eyes. The Doctor will choose one person. The Master of Ceremonies will then call for the Doctor to shut their eyes.
The Master of Ceremonies will then call for the Mafia to open their eyes. The Mafia must collectively decide one person to kill. The Masterof Ceremonies will then call for the Mafia to shut their eyes.
The Master of Ceremonies will then call for the Angel to open their eyes. The Angel will decide on one person then be called upon to close their eyes.
The Master of Ceremonies will then call for the Sheriff to open their eyes. The Master of Ceremonies will ask whether the Sheriff wishes to kill somebody that night. The Sheriff replies by either nodding (and pointing to whom they wish to kill) or shaking their head.
The Master of Ceremonies will then call for the Sheriff to close their eyes. Then they will call for everybody to open their eyes. The Master of Ceremonies will announce any deaths that occured (the killed player must reveal their card to the group) and begin Day Two.

Roles

The Mafia

  • Also known as The Werewolves
  • Evil
The Mafia are the players that draw the selected Mafia Cards. The Mafia operate as a team unto themselves (much like their online counterparts). Their job is that of an innocent over the day (IE: They may discuss with the group, they may vote etc), however, at night, their true nature is revealed. The Mafia are the "evil" members of society. Their job is to kill the innocents before they are all killed themselves.
Each night, the Mafia must collectively decide on one person to kill. They do so by pointing at whom they wish to kill. Once the whole group has decided, the mafia close their eyes at the order of the Master of Ceremonies.
In small games, only one Mafia card is placed in the pack. As the game size increases, the number of Mafia members should increase too. Alternatively, another team (usually a different set of black picture cards) can be added. In this case, the Mafia (and the other evil team) must eliminate both the innocents and their opposing evil team (who operate exactly like the Mafia).

The Angel

  • Also known as The Dreamer
  • Innocent
The Angel (much like its online counterpart) can dream each night. They do so by awaking in the night and pointing at who they wish to dream of. The Master of Ceremonies will either shake their head (if the selected player is innocent) or nod (if the selected person is mafia).
It is therefore important for the Master of Ceremonies to know who the Mafia members are.

The Sheriff

  • Also known as The Vigilante
  • Innocent
The Sheriff (much like its online counterpart) has a single bullet. Each night until this bullet is used, the Master of Ceremonies will ask whether or not the Sheriff wishes to use their bullet. If the Sheriff does, they point to one player. That person will be killed (unless the kill is stopped by the Doctor, in which case the person survives and the bullet is wasted).
In the event where the remaining two people are a Mafia member and the Sheriff, the game will be called a draw unless the Sheriff has used their bullet. This rule is subject to change according to the Master of Ceremonies, provided they make it clear what will happen in this case prior to the game beginning.

The Doctor

  • Also known as The Healer or The Protector
  • Innocent
Each night, the Doctor selects one player other than themself. That person will be protected from any form of death over the night.

Rules (Abridged)

  • You may not show your card to anybody unless you are dead.
  • Once you are dead, you must show your card (unless stated otherwise by the Master of Ceremonies prior to the game).
  • Once you are dead, you may not speak (though, depending on the rules set at the start of the game, you may keep your eyes open during night).
  • During night, you must remain silent and must keep your eyes closed unless directed to do otherwise by the Master of Ceremonies.
  • You may lie throughout the game, but you cannot ask for proof in the form of a card.
  • Each day everybody must vote on one person to kill at execution. If there is no majority, another brief discussion period is given and everybody must vote again upon the conclusion. If there is no majority (or if there is a successful execution), the person is killed. Night falls.
  • During the first night, when you are woken at the Master of the Ceremonies call, you must make yourself known to the Master of Ceremonies.
  • If the game reaches a point where the innocents cannot physically reach a majority over the Mafia, the Mafia win.
  • The Master of Ceremonies' word is final.

Variations

  • There are many variations you can play with the game. Some include...
The Master of Ceremonies is chosen by whoever draws the Joker card from the pack of selected cards.
    More roles are added/altered
The game begins as 'Night Zero' where everybody shows their card to the Master of Ceremonies simulataneously
You do not reveal your card upon death, instead, it is up to the individual players to "declare" when they think the game is over. If correct, the player who called it correctly is Master of Ceremonies for the next round. If incorrect, that player dies.
